Text about solo show, 'Flow II':

Inspired by the mesmerising images from ‘an album of fluid motion’, by Milton Van Dyke, I explored the psychological meaning of the word flow. In psychology, flow, is known colloquially as being ‘in the zone’. It is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterised by complete absorption in what one does, resulting in a loss of space and time.

 

As well as the conceptual theme, flow also complements the physical objects around the space which all relate to air pressure. Two molecular hand-painted glass works depict the patterns of disrupted airwaves, captured by 60s mechanical engineering techniques - prompted by conversations from Imperial College London's aeronautics department. The application of the pointillism technique of the chalk ink to create the white airwaves certainly leant itself to the hypnotic concept of 'flow; to be immersed in energised focus'. The neons acted as the objects, piercing through the air to create the waves. Immersive vocal reverberations echoed around the room, to compliment the rhythmic and otherworldly nature of the work.

The soundscape was a collaboration with musician and songwriter, John Drake, from rock bank The Dust Coda.
